Most sit-ins can be used with a sprayskirt, which will help keep you dry. Many but not all are outfitted so you can hook your knees under the deck. This lets you put the boat up on edge, which can make maneuvering easier. This can also let you stabilize the kayak if it gets off balance and even roll it. Sit-ins come in many varieties, from recreational boats that are easy for beginners to get started in to high performance kayaks for open ocean and whitewater. Many sit-ins have sealed hatches and bulkheads for (mostly) dry storage. Some sit-ins are a little tricky to get back in if you capsize and come out of the boat– you need to empty the water out, and depending on the specific boat, you might need some help stabilizing it before hopping back in.

Sit-on-top kayaks are generally very easy to get started paddling (with the exception of surf skis, which are long, narrow, high performance racing boats). Many are very stable, and if they do tip over, they’re fairly easy to get back on. Some also have hatches for storage. Some sit-on-tops can be a bit sluggish to paddle. This can be the case with sit-on-tops that are designed for stability– the tradeoff is you don’t get as much speed.

As for the Wave Junior, it’s “designed just for kids”, so hopefully you’re only considering it if you’re a kid (or kid-sized or for your kids). The best part is that it’s only 8. The ‘shipping weight’ of the kayak is only 13 lbs. If that’s the actual weight, that’s very light, which is usually good, but considering it’s a plastic boat, it makes me wonder about how durable it is. A big downside to the kayak is it doesn’t have a backrest, so it probably won’t be comfortable to paddle for long distances. While it comes with a paddle, that paddle is probably very heavy (and if you get it, stick with the 65″ setting, 85″ is way too long).

I can’t really give it a 1-10 since it really depends on what you’ll use it for. If you’re just going to play around with it for short amounts of time at the lake, it could be fine for you. If you want to do longer distance or more challenging water, look for something else.

Taken on the island of Nåttarö (I’ve seen it spelled Nåtarö, too), south of Nynäshamn, which is south of Stockholm. It’s about a 1.5 hour train/bus ride from Stockholm. Then the ferry ride is about 25 minutes.

This island is known for it’s sand. There’s also a sheltered harbor where boaters come every summer and just park for a week or many weeks. They relax, let the kids play, socialize in the evenings….
